Actually, I think in "I swam deep," deep could be a prepositional phrase... I always thought of Deep Purple as being a kind of purple, and therefore an adjective. I think even Deeply Purple would still be an adjective (it's describing the adjective!). Adverbs have to describe the verb, right? So Purple would have to be a verb in some sense...
