Nick made up this game/quiz on Facebook Notes, and I decided to post it here, because it was fun and I don't think anybody reads Facebook Notes. The idea is you have to name bands that fit different criteria (see below). Unsurprisingly, considering all my musical knowledge comes from Rock Band, and I'm too proud to use references or think very hard (I think that violates the spirit of the game), I did a pretty crappy job (see further below).

1. Think of a band name that has a verb.
2. Think of a band name that has an adjective.
3. Think of a band name that has an adverb.
4. Think of a band name that has a preposition.
5. Think of a band named after a book or part of a book (character, etc.).
6. Think of a band named after a movie or part of a movie.
7. Think of a band named after a work of visual art.
8. Think of a band named after a person.
9. Think of a band named after a place.
10. Think of a band named after an object.
11. Think of a band named after a body part.
12. Think of a band named after a bug.
13. Think of a band name for each of the four elements.
14. Think of a band that has a name 5 words long or longer
15. Think of a band that has a name 4 letters or shorter.
16. Think of a band name that rhymes.
17. Think of a band name that’s alliterative.
18. Think of a band name that’s Onomatopoeic.
19. Think of a band name that’s an oxymoron.
20. Think of a band name that’s an acronym.

1. Journey could be a verb!
2. Moody Blues? How are the first bands that jump into my head so lame? (Sorry, forty-year-old smooth rock fans.)
3. Uh... Suddenly... Probably... I got nothin'.
4. Presidents of the United States of America. (Two "of"s!)
5. Cinderella? Does that count? I think that's what I have to go with unless I can convince you that there was a character in the Jungle Book called Def Leppard.
6. This is tough because you have to know that the movie came first. Also, because I clearly don't know any bands.
7. What!!!! I DEFINITELY don't know any of those! RODIN'S THE THINKER. IS THAT A BAND.
8. Jefferson Airplane is probably named after Thomas Jefferson, right???
9. Oh, maybe Jefferson is a place. Anyway, this one is too easy. Boston, Chicago, Kansas. POINTS PLZ.
10. Crash Test Dummies.
11. Talking Heads. (I'm on a Canadian roll here. Can I work in Alanis Morisette and BNL somehow?)
12. A bug!!! Do the Beatles count even if they are spelled wrong? Oh, well, I can also give you the Crickets.
13. Earth Wind and Fire. BOOM THREE DONE. Plus, uh, something to do with liquid. Blood Sweat and Tears?
14. Can I use one I've already used? Because #4 would count here.
15. INXS!
16. Man, you'd think I could do this. The nearest I can think is Jon Bon Jovi.
17. Um... Yeah Yeah Yeahs?? (How do I find a way to cheat for every single question?)
18. WHAM!
19. Uhhhhh... The Ordinary Boys? (BURN ON BOYS)
20. Well I mean you can MAKE an acronym out of anything (see: BNL). Something that's primarily known by an acroynm? I'm not sure. NIN? AYWKUBTTOD?

Also I thought of some more questions for your enjoyment!

21. Think of a band named after a figure in mythology.
22. Think of a band named after a method of transit.
23. Think of three different color band names.
24. Think of a band named after a textile.
25. Think of a band named after a leader of men.

1. Think of a band name that has a verb.
My first instinct is to say Dokken, but I don't think Dokk is a verb. "Render Unto Caesar" also springs to mind but unfortunately I don't think that is a real band. I'm going to cheat a little and say "the Go Go's".
2. Think of a band name that has an adjective.
A bunch of bands I hated in college spring to mind. Green Day. Stone Temple Pilots. Live. I propose that in the band name "The Dave Matthews Band" Dave Matthews is some sort of adjectival phrase. Also The Flaming Lips.
3. Think of a band name that has an adverb.
This one is hard. I can't think of any. Oh wait, I know! Deep Purple.
4. Think of a band name that has a preposition.
System of a down!
5. Think of a band named after a book or part of a book (character, etc.).
The Harry Potters.
6. Think of a band named after a movie or part of a movie.
Nerf Herder
7. Think of a band named after a work of visual art.
Madonna (hehe)
8. Think of a band named after a person.
Presumably the person can not be in the band? I'm going to say Gnarles Barkley. More inspired by than named after, but whatever.
9. Think of a band named after a place.
Kansas. Boston. America. Asia. Europe.
10. Think of a band named after an object.
Black Flag.
11. Think of a band named after a body part.
The Frozen Heads is not really a real band, but The Talking Heads should work. Also The Flaming Lips.
12. Think of a band named after a bug.
Adam Ant.
13. Think of a band name for each of the four elements.
I presume we are banning Earth, Wind and Fire? Soggy Bottom Boys. Zephyr. The Flaming Lips. Earth is harder; I'm going to say Neil Diamond and stick to it.
14. Think of a band that has a name 5 words long or longer
Paul Revere and the Raiders.
15. Think of a band that has a name 4 letters or shorter.
Live.
16. Think of a band name that rhymes.
Oingo Boingo. Duran Duran.
17. Think of a band name that’s alliterative.
Duran Duran.
18. Think of a band name that’s Onomatopoeic.
Oingo Boingo.
19. Think of a band name that’s an oxymoron.
ummm.... men at work?
20. Think of a band name that’s an acronym.
AC/DC
21. Think of a band named after a figure in mythology.
Throwing Muses
22. Think of a band named after a method of transit.
Manhattan Transfer
23. Think of three different color band names.
Deep Purple, King Crimson, Black Flag.
24. Think of a band named after a textile.
A textile? WHAT? ummm........ does Black Flag count?
25. Think of a band named after a leader of men.
I KNOW that in the wake of 300 there's a band called Leonidas. OK, I've got one. The Presidents of the United States.

Hee hee! I like the answers for 17-19. I thought of "oingo boingo" later that night but it was TOO LATE.

Black Flag totally counts as a textile. I like how our oxymoron answers are both misandrous (?)

AC/DC is a good acronym! Nick's brother came up with REM which impressed me. Later that night I thought of AFI, NSYNC and arguably Eminem.

For the record, my personal answers for qq. 21-25 are Muse, Jefferson Starship, Deep Purple/Black Sabbath/White Zombie, Velvet Underground OR Psychedelic Furs (is fur a textile? I don't even know), and Queen or Queens of the Stone Age or POTUS or Kaiser Chiefs.

1. Think of a band name that has a verb. Run DMC; Bikini Kill

2. Think of a band name that has an adjective. Deep Purple/ Pink Martini

3. Think of a band name that has an adverb. I did not realize that Deep counted as an adverb in Deep Purple. I guess I don't deserve to get a PhD in English. However (also apparently you are not supposed to start a sentence with "however") I bet it turns out there is some special case where it is still just an adjective.

4. Think of a band name that has a preposition. Death by Chocolate

5. Think of a band named after a book or part of a book (character, etc.).
(Lisa Loeb and) Nine Stories
Harry and the Potters
Veruca Salt (contributed by faithful reader Paul Hughes, who is dictating that he wishes to be known as Faithful Reader Paul Hughes, or as Batman, the guy who is Batman)

6. Think of a band named after a movie or part of a movie.
They Might Be Giants

7. Think of a band named after a work of visual art.
Kiss
The Rembrandts

8. Think of a band named after a person.
Marilyn Manson; The Rembrandts

9. Think of a band named after a place.
Boston

10. Think of a band named after an object.
Guns & Roses

11. Think of a band named after a body part.
Heart

12. Think of a band named after a bug.
Papa Roach

13. Think of a band name for each of the four elements.
Wet Wet Wet
Air [Supply] (the supply part contributed by Paul)
Sweet Honey in the Rock
Hot Hot Heat

14. Think of a band that has a name 5 words long or longer
Paul Hughes and His Lady Orchestra

15. Think of a band that has a name 4 letters or shorter.
X

16. Think of a band name that rhymes.
Milli Vanilli

17. Think of a band name that’s alliterative.
Tony Toni Tone

18. Think of a band name that’s Onomatopoeic.
Wham!

19. Think of a band name that’s an oxymoron.
Hmm. . . def leppard, because leppards have good hearing by definition.
Hmm . . . motley crue, because most every crue is homogeneous.
MAYBE Stone Roses?
The Grateful Dead, because the dead are ingrates.
I know there are better and more awesome oxymorons than that.

20. Think of a band name that’s an acronym.
REM

BONUS LAURAS

21. Think of a band named after a figure in mythology.
Paul and I bet there is a band called Anubis. I am going to think about this more later.

22. Think of a band named after a method of transit.
Who Stole My Bike (from "Reality Bites") (actually the band name is "Hey, that's my bike")
The Rolling Stones
REO Speedwagon

23. Think of three different color band names.
Pink Martini; Deep Purple (listed above); Black Sabbath

24. Think of a band named after a textile.
I will think about this more later! I feel like posting.

I TOO thought of Deep Purple for adverb but then decided that "deep" is an adjective. I mean "deeply" is the adverb form right ie it is "Truly Madly Deeply"! You can have adjectives that modify adjectives I *think* but I guess you could say "I swam deep".

I DO NOT KNOW LINGUISTICS TAUGHT ME NOTHING.

Also, "They Might Be Giants" !! Good call! We are the only people who knew that was a movie first! (I bet they both just got it from the same poem or whatever, but still.)

Actually, I think in "I swam deep," deep could be a prepositional phrase...
I always thought of Deep Purple as being a kind of purple, and therefore an adjective. I think even Deeply Purple would still be an adjective (it's describing the adjective!). Adverbs have to describe the verb, right? So Purple would have to be a verb in some sense...

wiki: An adverb is a part of speech. It is any word that modifies any other part of language: verbs, adjectives (including numbers), clauses, sentences and other adverbs, except for nouns; modifiers of nouns are primarily determiners and adjectives.
example:
An extremely attractive woman entered the room.

Okay, but that definition says that any word which modifies any other word is an adverb, with adjectives being this special case for nouns. If that's true, then "deep" is an adverb in the sentence s "I have a deep purple eggplant" or "The eggplant was deep purple" (since purple is an adjective), but it's an adjective in the sentence like, "The color was a deep purple" (purple used as a noun). Does that make sense? I'm not saying it's not so. It just seems weird.

You'd think there would be a standard test.

I need some quick judgments, people. Adjective or adverb?

"very" in "very happy"
"very" in "very happily" (just for fun)
"light", "dark" as in "light purple", "dark purple"

Deep is an adjective, modifying the noun purple.
