I don't know if you should get a kindle! I got mine because I'm going on two trips in August and it would will be a lot easier to bring an ereader than to bring a suitcase full of plane and beach books. (Note to self: do get some trip books before leaving, as I doubt Whispernet works *on* the plane.) I got the cheap version.
I chose kindle because it supports a variety of formats (more than Sony or Nook) and because of the low price and the experimental browser, but as I said, it's pretty useless. I also seriously considered the European e-readers, such as Bebook or Cybook, which are similarly priced but accept more file formats (such as epub which is a common format for library ebooks). I would be interested to see how those compare.
