I've watched season 1 of Degrassi: The Next Generation now, and while I don't think it will ever displace Degrassi TOS in my affections--my love for Joey Jeremiah is pure--it does seem like it might be a bit better. It retains the good things about Degrassi--ongoing storylines, different characters highlighted in different episodes, dealing with the issues it wants to deal with in a mostly straightforward and non-euphemistic way--but it seems to keep a tighter focus (at least for the beginning) on a smaller group of characters, and to take a slightly more even-handed and realistic approach (granted this is on the Degrassi scale, so it's still objectively heavy-handed and preachtastic).
