Cape Cod Potato Chips (65¢): There are other deli-side-size potato chip bags as well, but Cape Cod is clearly the best choice. Who would have Lay's? Only a fool. Sixty-five cents is ridiculously cheap. Definitely your best value for money. A

Snickers (85¢) An unsurprising choice (I think there is a law that all vending machines must contain Snickers). While eighty-five cents is probably on the cheap side of the vending machine Snickers spectrum, after the chip prices, it looks like a poor investment. B-

Hershey's Cookies and Cream (85¢): I guess eighty-five is just the candy bar price. What are you going to do? If you want a candy bar, you want a candy bar. Cookies and Cream is a slightly offbeat but thoroughly solid Hershey choice. A

Ruger Wafers (85¢) I have never heard of Ruger. Is this some kind of no-nonsense German company? That's what I think of when I see the logo, which is pretty much just the word "RUGER" set in Haettenschwiler. These are your standard sugar wafers, the official cheapest cookie in the cookie aisle. I have eaten a lot of these in my day because they were almost always the most cookie for the cheapest price in the school store, but they are essentially simple sucrose in styrofoam form and in this vending machine I think we can do better. C

Goetz Caramel Creams (85¢) This vending machine seems to have an affinity for weird candies I used to like when I was a kid with almost no disposable income. I guess that is because those are the candies that are cheap. These were also "best value" candies for me when I worked at a corner store and spent my days with constant access to a candy counter. Candies were two for twenty-five cents and this was easily the biggest mouthful of candy for the price. And look, now I can get upwards of six for only eighty-five cents! But I won't, because I bet they are stale. Also, caramel creams are sort of gross. C+

Planter's Salted Peanuts (85¢): Who the hell is spending eighty-five cents on an airline-size packet of peanuts when you can get the same thing with chocolate and caramel draped over it? "Health." Whatever, if you cared about health, you would bring in your own multigrain bread from home. D

Spicy 'n Salty Mix (no brand name) (85¢): I don't know what this is and I don't want to know. D-

Pepperidge Farms Milanos ($1): Sure, it's a mini-pack, and sure, it's one of the most expensive items at one whole dollar, but considering that most vending machines charge you $2 for a pair of Pop Tarts, and considering that, for sheer enjoyability, one Milano is worth more than fifty Peanut Butter and Radioactive Cheddar Cracker packs, this is easily the pick of the machine. A+

How I enjoyed reading about your thoughts on these different snacks! I think I agree with you about most of them, except I would give Snickers a higher rating, maybe? and I guess it depends on how many Ruger Wafers you get for your money.

I envy your access to a vending machine that stocks Cape Cod Potato Chips!
