Not that you would be in this situation

In the Baby-sitters Club book I'm reading, Jessi is giving a reading at a play audition, and the organizers ask her to sing a song. She protests she hasn't prepared a song, but they say they just want to hear her voice and it can be anything, even "Happy Birthday." Pop quiz, hot shot: without having much time to think about it, what song would you sing?

I know BITS of a lot of songs, and Rock Band has taught me the real words for several, but I don't know if I could do them all the way through. "Dani California," my best Rock Band tune, has a LOT of words. I also know half of some duets, like the Valjean/Javert confrontation and "Sisters," but that doesn't do me much good. Showtunes are a decent bet for me, though. The first tunes that came into my head where I know all the words, though, were "Stars" from Les Mis and "The Street Where You Live" from My Fair Lady, both out way of my range. I guess if cornered, I'd probably go "Stars," because it's too low for me, and I'm better at faking too low than too high. Jessi sang "I Won't Grow Up" from Peter Pan, which I think was a solid choice, but I wouldn't have thought of it.

Now I remember the song from the beginning:

Tender shepherd, tender shepherd
Tell me how you count your sheep
One go to bed and two close your eyes
and three safe and happily, fast asleep.

But it would be a terrible choice because it's a round! All the "Peter Pan" songs are kind of bad solo performances. I guess "I Gotta Crow" would be pretty good, but you'd have to be good at crowing, which I AM NOT.

She was auditioning for the "Sixth Grade Follies," where they did skits lampooning the teachers. She ended up being cast as one of the two theater teachers who love Dolly Parton so I guess there was some singing. She knew the Peter Pan song because she had been in that play earlier!

You don't need a key to get a livejournal account anymore, Caolan!
