In Toronto--a grid--I usually know whether I am heading east or west, north or south. In Boston, I've never bothered to try, since so many of the streets go diagonally or curve in confusing loops. Today, standing in the Public Garden, I had one of those super-obvious "at the public library you can borrow books for free" moments when I realized I had more than enough information to tell which way was which.

* The sun sets toward Brookline - WEST
* Moss grows on the Beacon Hill-facing side of trees - NORTH
* People speak Chinese in the EAST
* THE SOUTH END. IT'S IN THE NAME.

I tried to maintain my knowledge of which direction I was heading into the building, but I may have lost it on the elevator.
