The fall TV season has started affording me more reason than ever not to do anything productive. Here's what I'm watching.
How I Met Your Mother (CBS) Has it jumped the shark? Probably! But maybe it is going somewhere! Keep hope alive!
House (FOX) Season 6 seems to be still sorting out its status quo with House in a transition state of addiction/misanthropy/insanity and various combinations of first-gen and second-gen ducklings signing on and flouncing off, but so far, the season has been quite enjoyable, particularly the two-hour premiere which actually made me a little teary. There is a tendency to overdiscuss the least important he-said she-said duckling-based D-plot, but that's been true since the beginning.
Criminal Minds (CBS) Matthew Gray Gubler injured his leg dancing, which the writers covered up by giving Dr. Reid a much manlier gunshot wound, so he's shunted off to the side, which is sad. I hope he recovers soon and they make up for it with nine episodes in a row about his personal history, which would make this like every other season. Reid aside, season 5 seems to be up to the same (admittedly mediocre) standards as the previous seasons, and I imagine I'll keep watching until the day they kill off Reid completely.
NEW: Glee (FOX) Ridiculous, over-the-top, and full of musical numbers, Glee manages to mock the cheesy cliches of high school stories while simultaneously clinging lovingly to them. Villainous, bizarre cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) is the runaway star of the show and has all the best lines. "It is my strong recommendation that both of these students be hobbled!"
NEW: Modern Family (ABC) I just watched all four first episodes of this on the ABC website, and I wish there were more because it's the kind of show you'd really like to learn about maybe a season and a half in and marathon all the episodes, preferably when you're sick. It's a family-based ensemble sitcom with a dry, mockumentary style and above-standard sharp writing. I've seen it compared to Arrested Development, and while nothing holds a candle to AD's cleverness, this has a similar level of heart (a basic message about dysfunctional-yet-loving family and a tendency to cut itself off when it starts to teeter on the sentimental). I have high hopes for the show heading into the surreal. "I think I just stole a baby's intellectual property!"
30 Rock (NBC) It is back! Also still good, apparently, although only one episode so far. I wish I could marathon this, too, but I am too impatient to wait for multiple episodes to pile up.
